This week we reach a turning point in the book of Daniel and it is startling. For six chapters we’ve journeyd through accounts of courage, faith, and conviction. From the fiery furnace to the lions’ den, the message has been clear: God reigns, even when it seems uncertain, overwhelming, unfair, or hopeless.
In chapter 7, everything changes. The book shifts from public stories to personal visions, from external events to spiritual realities. This part of Daniel belongs to a genre of writing called apoclyptic literature. Biblically apocalypse means “revealing, disclosure, to take off the cover.” Here's a great definition of this type of literature:
“seeks to enlighten and encourage a people despised and cast off by the world with a vision of the God who will come to impose his kingdom on the wreckage and rebellion of human history.” Dale Davis
Daniel 7 stands as the bridge. It connects the stories that build Daniel’s credibility with the visions that reveal God’s plan for the future. But it doesn't just connect the book of Daniel. It connects Genesis to Revelation. It connects to the Psalms, to Jesus, and to the beginning of the Church. It's a strange and wonderful chapter. directing us to the same message we've seen repeated throughout this book. And that message is the same from start to finish: Our God reigns.
Join us Sunday as we open Daniel 7 and see how, even in the midst of terrifying power and overwhelming evil, God’s people can stand unshaken, because the Ancient of Days still sits on His throne, and His kingdom shall never end.
